Looking for outfit ideas? Here's a great place to start. Pick one piece with lots of color (like on a baby or maybe mom...in this case it's on the little girl) Then have everyone else wear colors from that outfit. Mom has the pink, son has the yellow and Dad has the blue. It's an easy way to pull everything together.

It is so important to always keep babies safety in mind when doing poses like this. I am posting this so any photographer who wants to try this pose knows to have a stable (low to the ground) table below the swing. Have mom hold the branch and someone close to baby. A lot of the fun newborn poses that are popular today involve a bit of photoshop work. It's not cheating, it's just keeping baby safe.

First Annual Beautiful Life Session...nominate a child you know!

Announcing the First Annual Beautiful Life Sessions! In 2007 I was asked by a client to photograph her friend's child (Trinity Bright) who was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. After she left I had high hopes for her, in spite of what I had been told...she just looked so vibrant and full of life. So when I opened the paper 7 months later to see her picture and learn of her death I was just heart broken. I have done these type of sessions before but this one was the first where we actually lost the child. It made me realize just how important these images can be. Every child deserves a chance to feel beautiful. Now it is up to you to nominate a child that you think deserves a "Beautiful Life" session.

The "beautiful life" session will be free, session will include all digital images as well as a 24 page book showcasing images from their session. You can nominate any child under the age of 10 that is having health issues, struggling with... life in some way, or just an incredibly amazing child. Write about the child on the facebook page (scroll down to the bottom of this page and click on the facebook link) and then get your friends and family to vote by clicking the "like" button below your post. Nominations can be made for the next two weeks. Voting will end on September 15th at midnight.

They didn't quite love their Aunt Becky for making them wake up before the sun was up...but they quickly forgot when I showed them a see-through white sand crab on the beach. You know how I always say that babies MUST be under 10 days for newborn portraits (this baby is 5 weeks) and never get shots on picture day (she had shots that morning)....well this little stinker was just about as perfect as she could be for her family session. She was asleep when we wanted her asleep and awake when we wanted her awake. Yep, had too eat my words.

What a difference a couple of years can make! I photographed my brother's wedding to the beautiful Jennifer (an amazingly awesome sister-n-law...don't be jealous!) in 2008. I had to seriously beg my brother to wake up at 5:something am for a sunrise wedding shoot. Well this time around I had no trouble getting him to do a sunrise shoot because he knew it would be great. And how lucky for them that storm clouds would move in on their wedding day as well as baby's first trip to the ocean!

My cousin lives in Houston so I stopped at his house as part of my beach trip. His backyard is like a little tropical forest...perfect for fairytale images of two little girls. I had a car packed with tutus and props but none were needed. They had the cutest little dresses and their own little table and chairs. I'm thinking they need this tea party portrait in a canvas right over the real tea party set in their room. Wouldn't that be so cute?

Family Reunion! DFW Destination Photographer

Just got back from a wonderful trip to Crystal Beach (down by Galveston). We had a family reunion for my Mom's side and I got to see people I haven't seen in years. It was so fun to see all the cousins I remember as kids...with big kids of their own.
Crystal Beach is very quiet and peaceful. A lot of it is still being repaired from last year's hurricane Ike, but there are plenty of beach houses with beautiful beaches to hang out on. You have to drive your car onto a ferry to get there from Galveston and if you are lucky you might see a few dolphins playing around the boat. It was a great trip and I'm sad it's over but now I have some really great images to remember it.
This image is from the first part of the week when the skies were clear. Fortunately for us some storm clouds moved in towards the end of the week. Most people would grumble about storm clouds but I knew that would make the sunrise look amazing. And it did! I'll post those later in the week. For now, here's one of my sweet niece Lydia.

I tried to resist...really I did! I walked around the antique store 5 times, each time pretending not to see the charming little baby carriage, telling the salesclerk I was "just looking", telling my daughter "nothing good in here today, lets go", telling my brain just "WALK AWAY FROM THE CUTENESS!". Obviously none of that worked.

Photoshop Edits

The image below appears to have a sky that was dramatically changed. In reality, the sky in the second image is how it really looked on the morning of our photoshoot. I was mostly worried about getting the people to look right so I placed an external lighting source in the field to light them up, knowing I could darken the sky later in photoshop. It all worked out great. In the old days of film I would have used a filter on my lens and would have had a much harder time lighting the people correctly. Digital capture mixed with photoshop magic makes for a much easier job for me!

Ever wonder what I'm doing when I say that I'm "Editing" your images? For the most part, I'm just doing a really quick little edit...a little color punch, making the blacks more vivid, brightening selective areas, and maybe a little skin softening. It doesn't take me much time for most edits because I try really hard to get it right in the camera. I'm just wanting to liven them up and make them just a bit artsy.
Some images have a dreamy feel to them. For those I like to spend a little more time in photoshop adding textures, making the colors pop and giving it a bit of a "painted" look. For others I might be tempted to do muted vintage effects. It all depends on the image for the kind of edit I will do.

OK...back by popular demand...I am now offering the CD of digital images for purchase. You can still have me do the printing if you like, but for those who prefer to purchase the CD of images and print on their own...it is available!

The CD is $275 (+ tax) and includes: up to 6 people (add $10 for each additional person), shooting time in studio or on-location, 30-40 fully edited high resolution images in black and white and color on CD, a permission to print letter and information on printing your pictures. The CD will be ready within 10 days of your session. The full amount is due at the time of the session.

For those who are not interested in purchasing the CD: The minimum print purchase is $350 (due at the time of the session). Print prices are listed on the website under "Prices". The CD will be FREE with a print purchase of $700 or more. An online gallery of images will be available within 10 days of your session. You will have 10 days to view the images and place your print order. Orders will arrive in about a week (longer for items such as canvas gallery wraps and albums).

This little one was SO good for only being 3 years old! She was totally comfortable in front of the camera and posed like she had been doing it for years. We could have kept going all day...if it weren't for the dang scary dog that barked at her through the fence. I learned a little too late that she does NOT like dogs. This is MY guy. My teenage, not so little guy. I'm not allowed to call him my "baby" anymore, but to me he still is. I know before too long he will have big muscles, whiskers, and stand taller than me. And even then I will still think of him as my "baby". So as we say goodbye to 2009 and welcome in a new decade...I am posting some of the last few portraits of my little guy....still looking like a little guy. 2010 will bring wonderful things I am sure, but today I am saying a big thankful prayer for all of the blessings and memories of the past.

Christmas in Colorado

I hope everyone enjoyed Christmas with their friends and family. This year we tried something new. Since our kids are big and we don't have to keep up the story of the big guy and his reindeer....we decided to try something different. We spent our Christmas in Colorado. It was SO much fun and we finally got our white Christmas. Little did we know that our home back in Texas was getting it's FIRST White Christmas EVER! Murphy's Law. Here's a few images from my little point and shoot camera.

This was our FAVORITE part! We went to the Sulphur Hot Pots in Sulphur Springs Colorado. You had to run BAREFOOT through the snow to each of the 16 hot pots, ranging in temp from 102 - 126 degrees! It was crazy but fun.

I want to know what this smart mama bribed her FOUR boys with to get them all to play so nice for family photos? I mean, we all know how much boys (of all ages) love to get their pictures taken. Give them a choice of dressing up and being photographed for an hour or scrubbing toilets and changing poopey diapers and believe it or not, they'd probably choose anything BUT the pictures. But these boys got an A+ for picture day! I think this mom has some tricks she needs to share with the rest of us.

Just one for now.... About a month ago we tried to do this session at Bear Creek Park we arrived to Noah's Ark Flooding. I don't know what I was thinking....the weather channel said 100% chance of rain but somehow I still had hope for sunshine. This is my friend Emma kissing her honey. She is one of those people who could easily do a commercial for the Energizer Bunny or Red Bull. She is totally funny and so fun to be around that she completely lights up any room she's in. I love this picture of her because it's just....HER! A bright ray of sunshine. Her extended family of 18 was also photographed. More of those to come.

Next week is the time for fall pictures people! The leaves are at their best and the weather is looking good. (those leaves will not look like that in a month....well they will but they will all be on the ground!)

This couple really went the extra mile, waking up at the crack of dawn, braving the chilly morning, and tromping through swampy grass in high heel boots. (hopefully that swampy grass didn't attack their allergies like it did mine!). So glad we did all this though, pictures are always worth the work!

A couple of years ago I met a Master Photographer through a volunteer organization called "Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep". His name was Dave Cisco and he was the director for our area. (The organization provides free photography to families spending their last moments with a dying baby in the hospital.)
I asked Dave if he would help me with my photography. What he said really caught me off guard. He said "Throw everything you've done up until now away and start over!" Huh? Say what? "Yep, you need to start from scratch if you want to improve". He spent an afternoon with me teaching me about light and then encouraged me to go to several schools and classes over the next year. I told him he was my OB1 or my Mr. Miyagi and I was the karate kid. It hurt my pride just a bit but in the end I think he was right. I really needed to look at light in a new way. I still have a lot to learn but I'm getting there. I used a lot of what I've learned over the past year in this session with Ciara. We have a lot we can learn from our elders and I'm grateful for one who told me to start over. Dave, you will be missed by the photographic community.

These boys were REALLY well behaved and easy to work with....even the little 2 month old baby. As long as we kept moving around he was fine. I love these first two images. The light was so pretty in this spot. The last one was their bike from home. I had to laugh when one of the boys balked at riding in the grass because his mom and dad forgot to bring his helmet. Oh to have my son trained so well. :)

Twins and Family, Part Two

We got some very sweet maternity images of mom, as well as lots of family, sibling and individual shots. I am saving the family preview for mom and dad, just in case they want to surprise people for their Christmas cards. The last image in this set is a recreation of an old photograph. This is the same pose and dress as she was wearing as a child. I think we got it pretty close, thanks to a very cooperative two year old! And yes girls, this is Mr. Muscles from the last post.

I just had to post one quick image. Remember these two adorable brother/sister twins? They looked oh so tiny in their daddy's big strong arms 2 1/2 years ago. They came back today looking just as sweet. Their mommy is expecting a sister for them in a few months so we got some maternity, family, sibling and individuals all in one session. That's a lot of patience for two little toddlers but they handled it like old pros. Can't wait to show the rest of the sneak peek tomorrow, just one for now:

Little Peep

If I could just do newborns all day, every day, I'd be the happiest girl around. Little Miss S. was wide awake for all but about 30 seconds of our session. Usually that means a fussy baby but not this girl! She just wanted to hang out and watch me with my camera. We got some amazingly alert portraits for a less than two week old baby! And the whole session we didn't hear one peep from her.....well, not until her mommy tried to put her in her baby chick Halloween costume....get it? Peep? Yes, I know, I'm a funny girl. :)

Many people have asked if I'm going to have some kind of mini special for Christmas. Maybe you just recently got your family portraits done, or you just want something small for Christmas. This is the special for you! It is a "Night Before Christmas" storybook theme. All costumes that you see here (and more) are in the studio. These are quick 30 minute photo sessions that will be offered on three different dates, with plenty of time to spare for Christmas.

The cost is $150. What you get: 30 minute session, 10-15 images in a password protected online proofing gallery, One mounted 8x10 (any pose), One Three Fold "5"x5" Folio (any 3 images), 8 wallets (any one pose), and 3 Full Resolution Digital Files (with permission to print) so you can make your own Christmas cards. (your choice of poses)

Dates will fill fast so call or email to book your session quickly! pebblebrookportraits@yahoo.com or 817-368-4446. A $50 deposit will be required to hold your spot. This is credited towards the session and is fully refundable up to 48 hours before your session. If less than 48 hour notice is given to cancel, the deposit will be credited towards any session completed within 6 months of original appointment.

This session is for 1 - 4 children. Additional full-res digital files may be purchased for $25 each. Folio may be exchanged for three 5x7's if desired.

Eagle Scouts, DFW Photography

So very proud of these boys. These cousins will be getting their Eagle Scout Award this weekend, together. This is a big deal...very difficult to get and requires a lot of hard work. They are friends of my family so I am grateful for their example to my son who is also working towards his Eagle in the scouting program. Well done boys!

Yipee for me! This first image is exactly how I feel when someone shows up for their sunrise session and the sky looks like this! Amazing how the light changes isn't it? The second image down was actually taken first, can you see the color changes? I never really noticed how fast light changes with sunrises and sunsets until I started documenting it with my camera.
I always ask my seniors what their interests are. Sports? Choir? Band? This cute girl said she works on set design for plays at her high school. Hmmmm, how do I shoot that? And then she said she does target practice with her rifle sometimes....YES! Bring the rifle! I just loved the idea of getting this incredibly sweet dainty little thing with her very non-girly rifle.
Oh and check out her awesome eyes. I told her she had rainbow eyes because they had so many different colors in them. Beautiful!

This is by far one of my favorite kiddos to photograph, right up there with the Kolschein girls. She has the most adorable facial expressions and for being so little, she really does well with all the outfit changes and such. We managed to get her 2 1/2 year old portraits as well as a few holiday portraits as well. The family portraits are not being blogged because that's their Christmas card so it has to be a surprise! BTW, do you love my new hat???
